Stitch for Charity

If you enjoy cross stitching, sewing, or quilting, you might enjoy being a part of our wonderful group, World of Charity Stitching.

We currently have six open themes for quilts:  Fruits or Berries, Elvis, Forest Animals, Hello Kitty, Disney, and Teacups.

The members enjoy looking through their books and magazines to see what type of chart they would like to stitch for whichever theme they choose.  Some of the  ladies even stitch for multiple quilts.  There are many opportunities to stitch for the charities we support:  a Senior Care Facility, a Ronald McDonald House, and a domestic violence shelter.  We also donate some of our quilts to people who might be having health issues.

Here are a few of the squares that have been stitched recently:

We are also stitching holiday cards to give to the seniors at the Century Care Facility in Florida during the upcoming holiday season.

A Very Special Quilt

Meet Teresa-she was diagnosed with breast cancer not very long ago and is undergoing treatment.   One of our members, Pam, had suggested that our group create and donate a quilt made especially for Teresa with a few of her favorite things:  Shih-tzu puppy, sewing items, flowers.

The finished quilt was mailed to Teresa recently and she was thrilled to receive it.  Teresa wrote a note to our group:

"Dearest Pam and Ladies of WOCS,
I rec'd a surprise pkg. today, and when I opened it I saw the most beautiful quilt inside! It was such a surprise to know that my dear friend Pam, would request a quilt for me when I know she is going thru the same thing as I am. I was very emotional not to mention speechless. Pam knows that I have done many breast cancer quilts myself in other groups for breast cancer survivors and it meant a lot to me to do them, but to be on the receiving end is another story. It really isn't until then that you can appreciate the hard, dedicated work that goes into one of these quilts and the love and thoughtfulness with every stitch. I absolutely LOVE it and will cherish it forever and will think of you all when I wrap myself in it. I have enclosed a pic of me with my beautiful quilt. Thank you all for all your hard work, I truly feel special.
Teresa"

Teresa, we hope this special gift will help you during the upcoming months.  We were very happy to create this gift for you.

October is breast cancer month, so if you can do some small thing to help in the fight against breast cancer, you can make a difference.

An Owl Quilt for Melanie

Melanie is a WOCS member who lives in Alabama, works at Century Care Center and is our delivery person, as well as a stitcher.   Mel has been on a roller coaster life these last few years:  she lost her home to a fire, had family problems which are now all worked out, she worries about her dad and his health issues, she lost her cats to the house fire, lost her dog to a car accident, a puppy to a attack of a wild animal, one puppy to a snake bite.. Most of these were dropped off animals.   Mel lives in a very rural area of Alabama.

This year she had a hysterectomy and thyroid surgery; her thyroid was
cancerous, but the surgeon got all the cancer and no other treatments were needed.. Then to continue her streak of bad luck she twisted her ankle at work for the second time, so her ankle was still weak.  After months of doctor visits, therapy, medications, they finally sent her to a specialist, he had a MRI done and she found that she had torn the ligament in her ankle and had to have surgery again.

One of these days things might start going her way.. her luck has to change soon, she gets upset but she is strong and keeps moving on... she has to, she has two teenagers in the house to keep up with and one of them is learning to drive.

So, to help bring a little bit of sunshine into Mel’s life, our group has donated one of our quilts to her:  The Owl Quilt.  Since Mel is a stitcher too and her step-mom, Bonnie is one of our talented quilters, I know she appreciates all the work that goes into making a quilt.  We were very happy to give this special quilt to Mel.

Melanie said, “I am doing alright; I got my stitches out yesterday and I’m in a brace and a boot. It still hurts to try and bear any weight but I start therapy in two weeks. I haven’t done much cross stitching but I have been crafty . . . I try and do one project a day.  I appreciate the quilt and so does my daughter-haha. I have to fight for it! Thank you all for it. And please let everyone know I’m doing ok.”

Bonnie C.-The Grand Prize Winner

Bonnie C., one of our very talented quilters, recently won The Grand Prize from Martelli Enterprizes :  the Work Station and Cutting Table (pictured below).  Bonnie is working in her sewing/craft room to make room for the newest addition to her sewing, crafting and quilting tools.  She was very excited to win this fabulous prize.

Here is what Bonnie said about winning:  "You would not believe the morning I've had. I don't know whether to laugh or cry and when I say cry it is not from sorrow but from sheer joy. My  husband took a phone call when I was out in the yard working, he came and told me a guy called and said I won the online drawing... The guy was from Martelli's sewing and quilting supply shop.. Martelli's sells a great fabric cutting system and I do happen to have some of their products and they are fantastic to work with..very top quality. What did I win you ask, I won the BIG Grand Prize.. Each month they have a draw for $100 gift certificate to their store, the yearly grand prize is a complete cutting system and table, which is a $3,000 system... yes I said $3,000 system and I won it.... the table is hydraulic, and it has a complete cutting system with it.. So can you see why I don't know whether to laugh or cry, I have never won anything like this... Martelli's will be delivering the table and setting it up for me in the next few weeks... I am just so excited."

The members of World of Charity Stitching are very excited and happy for Bonnie too.  She is one of our most prolific quilters.  She loves to makes quilts for charity from the squares our group cross stitches.  Be sure and visit Martelli's Facebook page.  They have a nice write-up on Bonnie and will be featuring her in their upcoming publication.

Again, congratulations to Bonnie!  She certainly deserves this win.

On The Beach Quilt

On Wednesday, 9/5, the On the Beach Quilt and Pillow were delivered to the Ronald McDonald House.  The staff at RMH are so appreciative of our gifts-they always make such nice comments about all the work our ladies put into these quilt squares and the finishing of the quilt.

It is a great feeling to be able to give something very special to a local charity that does so much for sick children in the Pensacola community.
